#27 Majestic Duomo – Duomo, Florence

WOW! During our time in Florence, we ended up spending quite a lot of time around the Duomo. The area around the Duomo is called the Piazza del Duomo and it is amazing! I could spend so much time just walking around exploring the area, finding new things, peek in different shops and having a coffee or cocktail outside different cafes. The Piazza is stunning and the atmosphere is different at night than it is in the day.

The Duomo itself is the heart of the Piazza. Standing tall and proud in the centre of the square, it demands all of the room and space around it. It is truly breathtaking. Every intricate detail of the exterior takes your breath and grabs your attention as you notice that those details are only a small percentage of what makes this unbelievable structure so impressive. The Duomo Tower stands up on the cathedrals left-hand side at the front of the Duomo. The Tower is also decorated with beautiful intricate details that confirm its relationship with the Duomo.

Ascending the stairs to the top of the tower is worth the 414 steps, jumps and aches you will do. To reach the height of the bell tower is demanding and rewarding, exhausting and exhilarating, expensive and 100% worth it! But to then also climb 463 steps to reach the top of the Duomo as well. That’s just crazy. I would advise having a break between the two and not doing what we did and leave it until last minute so you pretty much sprint up and down, both. It is a killer! Climbing both towers is worth it, they are both unique in their own ways. Both climbs are different, both views and experiences are unique. So if you get the chance to climb, do them both!
